I’ve been working in the garden a lot lately, and I’m proud to say I have an emerging crop of strawberries, various peppers, (more peppers here) tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers and various other herbs coming along.
Anyone can grow herbs and veggies, regardless of the amount of space. Containers work well because you can move them around and adjust for weather conditions it’s easier to protect them from the little varmints that want to steal your bounty!
I’m experimenting with garlic spray as an organic method of controlling pests, and I’m happy to report it’s working well. Garden spiders have set up shop in the tomatoes and have been a big help.
All I can say is that you develop an incredible sense of pride and accomplishment, especially when you grow your food from seed.
My garden is a hidden oasis of activity, full of all sorts of wildlife. You see, when you don’t spray your yard with tons of poison, you get clover and wild strawberries that provide food, nourishment and habitat for birds, bees and insects beneficial to your garden, like ladybugs and preying mantis. When you spray your lawn, you get a nice green carpet that is essentially dead, because the wildlife are gone, especially amphibians. So far this spring, I’ve seen 42 species of birds, chipmunks, squirrels, Garter snakes, dragonflies, ladybugs, bats, lots of worms and several species of garden spiders.
It’s hard to beat sitting in the garden with a good book and a glass of wine surrounded by so much diversity of life.
