Too damn many people.
Not too many guns. Not even too many automobiles. Too many people.
Ban people.

In 2001, the majority of gun deaths in the US was from Suicide ( http://library.med.utah.edu/WebPath/TUTORIAL/GUNS/GUNSTAT.html ). I'm fairly confident that trend has continued.
Realistically, out of a population the size of the United States, these are pretty small numbers.
They would be even smaller were the population smaller.

Limited gun control in urban centers (as opposed to federal, wide-spread, Orwellian measures) worked in the late 1800's because the communities were smaller, and the open spaces between them were larger. Putting away your guns for a night out on the town and at the bar is just common sense. Taking away a man, or womans, gun when they are out in the backcountry makes absolutely none what-so-ever.
Too many people, not enough open space.

Encourage zero population growth (if not negative population growth), give tax rebates for couples with no children, or less than 2 children. Sell more cars and give everyone who buys a new car and shiny new Smith & Wesson.

In 2006, 31,000 people were killed with guns in the united States (CDC). That's 85 per day. The rate is higher now.

In 2006, 45,000 people died in motor vehicle accidents in the united States.

By 1975, a total of 55,000 American soldiers were killed during the failed invasion and occupation of Viet Nam.

Do the numbers.

When do we declare private automobile and gun ownership insane and do away with it?

Why is our society waging a daily war against its own members?
